short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft
(DOD, NATO) Fixed-wing aircraft capable of clearing a 15-meter (50-foot) obstacle within 450 meters (1,500 feet) of commencing takeoff run, and capable of landing vertically. Also called STOVL. See also short takeoff and landing.
